Valentine’s Day is less than a week away … have you made your dinner reservations yet? White Rock restaurants are ready to take your reservations for this most amorous night of the year and many of them are offering special menus to make it a dining experience to remember. Follow up your romantic meal with a walk on the historic White Rock pier or a stroll along the promenade.
Barrique Kitchen & Wine Bar, White Rock’s newest eatery is offering a $60 four-course menu by owner, and Le Cordon Bleu trained, Chef Josiah Tam. Described as New York City wine bar meets Paris bistro, Barrique’s menu starts with a share plate of marinated olives and herbes de provence popcorn, before offering diners an appetizer choice of house-made boudin blanc sausage or roasted beets and pears with goat cheese and micro greens. Entrees include leg of duck confit, pan seared cod or roasted mushroom gnocchi. Finish this sumptuous feast with rooibos tea crème brulee or a dark chocolate ganache.

Celebrate Valentine’s Day (or Valentine’s week, the menu is available from February 9 – 14) at White Rock’s only Irish Pub, with a prix fixe three-course meal (including a bottle of wine) for $75. Start with pan seared prawns in a garlic, lemon, butter and breadcrumb sauce, strawberry spinach salad or a tomato basil bisque. For your main choose between Tortellina alla Gigi, pork tenderloin in a white wine gravy or grilled lemon & herb chicken. Finish up with butterscotch crème brulee or a classic New York cheesecake.

Spice things up with dinner for two at Primos Mexican Grill. Primos is a relative newcomer to the beach, but they’ve been serving up their family’s traditional Mexican dishes since 1959. For $55, enjoy an appetizer of sizzling prawns or taquitos, a main course of chicken or beef fajitas for two and a coconut Kahlua flan or sopapillas for dessert.

Treat your loved one to a three-course dinner designed by MasterChef winner Chef Matthew Stowe and JRG Executive Chef Andy Slinn. Available from February 12 to 18, dinner is $25 and includes a can of Two Pals lager or a glass of house wine. For your appetizer, choose from San Marzano tomato soup, roasted mushroom soup or a classic Caesar salad. Entrees include steak frites, rigatoni or tequila lime chicken salad. And dessert is a fresh baked cookie with vanilla ice cream and caramel.

Long time favourite of locals and visitors, the team at Charlie Don’t Surf has created a $35 (per person) prix fixe menu to celebrate this most romantic day. This three-course meal starts with a soup or salad, and then moves on to a choice of blackened wild pacific salmon, creole chicken with sautéed garlic prawns (Earth + Surf) or a three cheese pesto penne. For dessert enjoy your choice of tiramisu, apple crumble, New York cheesecake or triple chocolate chunk brownie.

Recently awarded the White Rock business person of the year, Jan’s on the Beach owner, and chef, Janet Wait has created a set menu for Valentine’s week (February 10 – 18). At a price of $49 per person, the three-course menu starts with a choice of appetizer – baked brie, mussels on toast or a fennel, orange and kale salad. Entrees include beef tenderloin with peppercorn demiglaze, handmade wild mushroom and three-cheese ravioli, a gluten-free bouillabaisse of mussels, clams, crab, prawns and scallops or a roasted pepper and goat cheese stuffed chicken breast. For dessert there is a shared dessert trio of molten chocolate lava cake, cinnamon crème brulee and crispy apple spring rolls.

Make a reservation at the Wooden Spoon on February 14 and you’re in for a treat as this is the only day that you’ll be able to taste their new pear and ricotta tortellini. Follow the tortellini with a main course of Beet Wellington (yes, you read that correctly … “beet”), sesame-crusted Yellowfin tuna, chicken & leek pie or a flat iron steak. And for dessert, sink your spoons into strawberries and whipped cream served over mocha mousse, dark chocolate truffles and shortbread cookies. This three-course meal is available for $55 per person.
