Age-old wisdom says that being near the seaside is good for your health, and we can’t help but agree! With catch-words like “hygge” (a Danish concept that means cozy) and “shinrin-yoku” or forest-bathing (a Japanese concept related taking in the forest through our senses) taking society by storm, we’re surprised that there isn’t yet a word describing the benefits of a visit to the beach.

White Rock beach

Many say that a visit to the beach can ground you and put you in touch with your spiritual self. We’re not sure how true that is, but when you’re standing on the beach staring out at the vastness of the ocean and the horizon stretching out in front of you, it’s hard to not truly appreciate the beauty of nature.

In the 1800s the sea air, warm sun, and cold water were often “prescribed” as critical for a patient’s recovery from a variety of ailments. And research shows that spending time near the ocean has positive effects on your health and wellbeing, and it’s almost a given that, when in a beach environment, you are going to relax.

Well, we love going to the beach! And with 8 kilometres (4.9 miles) of sand and warm shallow waters, you’re sure to find that perfect spot to lay down your blanket and pitch your umbrella.

Here are 8 reasons why every beach day is a good day:

Fresh air
Take a deep breathe and let the salty air fill your lungs. Sea air is filled with small drops of ocean water containing salt, iodine, and magnesium, which are known to help boost the immune system.

It’s good for your skin
Saltwater contains many vitamins and minerals and has been known to be beneficial in treating skin conditions like acne and eczema, helping with dry skin and can be beneficial for healing wounds. And, wet sand is a natural exfoliant that helps keep skin clean, healthy and rejuvenated. Go for a walk on the beach, your feet will thank you!

Workout in the water
Grab a paddleboard or a kayak, go for a swim or a run down the beach. Exercise is more fun at the beach, and if you’ve ever tried to run on the beach you’ll know it’s a great workout!

Clear the mental clutter
There’s something magical about spending a little time on the beach. The calming sights and sounds make it easier to let go of any stress that you’re carrying.

Technology detox
There’s nothing like a trip to the beach to force a technology detox because it turns out that sand and water do not mix well with electronics! Take a break from the screen, unplug and recharge yourself on the beach.

Smiling
Recent studies have shown that our facial expressions have the ability to influence our moods. This means that you can’t help but feel better when you’re smiling and the beach is guaranteed to bring a smile to your face. It’s a win-win.

Vitamin D
The sun is a great source of Vitamin D, which is something that your body needs for healthy bones, skin and your immune system. Experts say that just 10-15 minutes of daily sun exposure provides you with your daily recommended dose of vitamin D. So soak it in, and then don’t forget to put on the sunscreen and slap on a hat.

Bonding time
Take a look around the next time you’re at the beach and you’ll notice that everywhere you look people are connecting. Families are building sandcastles, friends are laughing and playing Frisbee and special moments are taking place. At the beach, you live in the moment
